Preserving Your Smile
Retainers at Coombs Orthodontics
First of all, our Coombs Orthodontics team wants to congratulate you for completing your orthodontic treatment! After your clear aligners or braces are removed, our team will create a retainer tailored to the fit of your teeth so your smile will last a lifetime. Our team is dedicated to creating a smile that you love, and your retainers are responsible for preserving your new smile for a lifetime.
Retainer Etiquette
Wear it Nightly
Remember to wear your retainer every night so it can properly do its job of retaining you new smile!
Clean it Daily
Keep your retainer squeaky clean by periodically cleaning it with antibacterial soap and a soft bristle toothbrush.
Keep it Safe
When you take your retainer out, return it to its case immediately so it doesn’t get lost or damaged.
How Do Retainers Work?
Your custom-fitted retainer is designed to preserve the new position of your teeth after your braces or clear aligners are removed. The muscles in your mouth are constantly applying pressure to your teeth and without regular retainer wear, there is nothing to combat that force. Your retainer protects your teeth from your muscles and their natural instinct to move your teeth back to their old position.
Will my Retainer Cause Pain or Discomfort?
Some patients feel mild discomfort or slight pressure as they adjust to wearing their retainers, but it doesn’t last long and isn’t considered painful. Since you will wear your retainer so routinely, you should adjust to the feeling of it relatively quickly.
When Should I Wear My Retainer?
Dr. Coombs will give you specific instructions for your retainer depending on your orthodontic needs. Most patients need to wear their retainer full-time for a period, then switch to nightly wear. In order to preserve your new smile, make sure to follow Dr. Coombs’ instructions.
